Electrical Fundamentals with HVAC Design: Design, Contract and Installation

11th March 2015

Electricity drives almost all the mechanical equipment that we specify, supply, install and maintain. A poor understanding of electrical fundamentals leads to poor specification, installation and operation of these services. This presentation aims to provide consultants, contractors and suppliers with a fundamental understanding of electricity.

Head Trainer and Assessor for Electro Technology at the Bowen Hills Campus of Careers Australia, Caiphen Von Brandis-Martini will discuss the types of loads – inductive, reactive – and their effect on the installation and power authority. He will also examine the importance of calculating loads, demand management, fault current and earth-loop impedance, and the importance of AS3000 and AS3008 in cable management.

David Shelberg, Manager of the Electrical Division of AE Smith, will provide an overview on the various types of switchboards and form types. A number of the larger chillers are now HV and require a very different DB than previously used. This means commissioning staff are often not fully licensed electricians when opening MSSB and now there is a need to have isolated sections.

AIRAH company member Innotech Control Systems Australia plans to release a new HVAC and BEMS platform known as "Omni". Distribution Manager Thomas McIlhatton, M.AIRAH, will provide a special pre-production preview of the controller’s capabilities.
